Each year, more than 40,000 people are diagnosed with cancer of the structures of the head and neck, including the mouth, larynx, nose, sinuses, throat, tonsils, tongue, thyroid and parathyroid.
Oral and head and neck cancers are often found during routine dental or medical exams. Your doctor may notice a swelling or lump in your throat or face; or your dentist may detect a sore that won’t heal. Other symptoms such as hoarseness, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, pain or neck swelling may be the first signs of a problem. Tobacco use, alcohol use and human papillomavirus infection are leading risk factors. Head and neck cancers are nearly twice as common among men as they are among women, and are diagnosed more often among people over age 50 than they are among younger populations.
